How Pahal fosters mental well-being for the TG community?

The importance of mental health is gaining wider recognition in the world today. Even the most marginalized members of society, who lack access to basic physical needs like food and shelter, often report that their psychological needs are as important for them as their physical well-being. Feeling connected to a community and having a sense of self-worth and purpose is as vital to human survival as food or water.
Members of the transgender community, whom Pahal works with, face unique challenges in building a positive self-image and strong connections with others. Being marginalized, they can internalize negative messages about themselves and their abilities, often face physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and struggle with access to education and stable employment. All this can trap them in lives of poverty, instability and exploitation by others, often leading to PTSD, chronic stress and trauma, depression, anxiety, or risk of self-harm or suicide.
Building strong and positive coping skills is vital to help queer and transgender people navigate the unique challenges they face, advocate for themselves and their rights, and gain access to education and sustainable livelihoods. These individuals need to feel seen, heard, and supported as they deal with often ongoing traumatic situations in their lives while trying to gain the freedom to live peacefully as who they are, work with dignity, and love who they love.
At Pahal, our trained counselors help community members gain coping skills, become more resilient, and set and achieve goals in their personal and professional lives. Community members find a positive and affirming environment here, where they give and receive mentorship, career, health and self advocacy guidance, and help create strong and positive role models for the queer and transgender community.
